I magine waking up sleepy-eyed on a Sunday morning only to discover that Rs 20,000 has disappeared from your bank account. That’s precisely what happened to Sonu Rajput, an IP University BBA student, who discovered his card
information had been stolen after going to a Noida bar. Another victim, Nidhi Chowdhury, lost Rs 14,500 after celebrating her birthday at the same bar. Their mistake? Simply handing over their credit or debit cards to staff for payment. What they didn’t know was that employees had been cloning customers’ cards for months, selling the details to fraudsters for a commission. This wasn’t an isolated incident, similar scams were also uncovered at a Burger King outlet in Noida’s GIP Mall.
If you think you’re too smart to fall for card fraud, think again. Even the most cautious individuals can be targeted.
5 Ways Your Card Could Be Misused at a Restaurant
- Card Skimming: Scammers use skimming devices on point-of-sale (POS) machines to steal card information. This stolen data is then used to create cloned cards for unauthorized transactions.
- RFID Skimming: Scammers equipped with RFID readers can wirelessly extract card details from contactless credit and debit cards without physical contact. This makes it easy for them to access sensitive information without the cardholder noticing.
- Dishonest Employee Transactions: A server or cashier may take a customer’s card to process payment and secretly record or photograph the card details, including the CVV code, for later use.
- Compromised POS Systems: Hackers target restaurant POS systems to steal customer payment data. Malware installed on these systems can capture and transmit card details to cybercriminals.
- Overcharging or Duplicate Transactions: A few dishonest workers may double-charge a customer or charge extra on a bill in the hopes that the customer won't catch it until much later.
So, how do you stay ahead of these scammers?
How to Stop Card Fraud Before It Starts
- Never Let Your Card Out of Sight: Never hand over your card to anyone. When making payments, ask for a handheld POS machine to be brought to you or use contactless payment options like UPI, NFC-based payments, or mobile wallets.
- Shield Your PIN Like Your Life Depends on It: When entering your PIN, always keep your hand over the keypad. It may feel unnecessary, but remember you can never be too careful from scammers trying to steal your information.
- Upgrade to Chip-Based Cards: Most skimming devices target magnetic strip cards. Ask your bank for an EMV chip-based card, which is significantly harder to clone.
- Monitor Your Statements Regularly: Check your bank statements weekly for any suspicious transactions. If something looks off, report it immediately.
- Enable Transaction Alerts: Activate SMS and email alerts for all transactions. This way, if someone tries to use your card, you’ll know immediately and can take action before it’s too late.
- Activate Multi-Factor Authentication: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for all your transactions. Whether it's an OTP, biometric verification, or an app notification, an extra step of verification makes it harder for fraudsters to access your account.
- Report Lost or Stolen Cards Immediately: The faster you act, the better. If you misplace your card, block it instantly via your bank’s app or customer service helpline to prevent unauthorized use. First, call your bank’s customer care number to report the fraud and get a Complaint Reference Number for tracking. Next, dial 1930 , the Cyber Crime Helpline, which handles financial frauds. Cyber Cells usually register complaints within 48 hours, so acting fast increases the chances of recovery
